James Penrose has won the final race at round three of the 2019/20 MSNZ ITM Formula Ford Championship at Teretonga Park. The race finished under safety car which spoiled what was shaping up to be great duke for the lead between Penrose, Zac Stichbury and Thomas Boniface.
The drama began before the race even started when Billy Frazer didn’t get on track before pitlane exit closed and was forced to start from the pitlane.
Frazer’s absence from the starting grid left Penrose and Boniface to battle off the line with Stichbury closely behind them. Penrose then took control of the race a few laps in before Sitchbury grabbed the lead briefly on lap five. Penrose then usurped Stichbury and took the lead again on the penultimate lap, a move that would prove crucial.
Meanwhile down the pack, Frazer was setting blistering lap times attempting to catch up to the front end of the field. Frazer pushed just a little too much and ran way off at turn one on the sixth lap, he then rejoined the without damage.
Also exploring the outside of the racetrack was Ronan Murphy who ran off and got stuck in the gravel at the final corner on lap seven, prompting a safety car which would control the field until the chequered flag.
Callum Crawley finished just outside the podium places in fourth with Billy Frazer recovering to fifth.
Penrose extends his championship lead out to 67-points over Crawley who narrowly holds second over Frazer by four-points.
